They are ones that they grow for themselves, not for market. Original names have long since been forgotten, and the varieties are probably different now from the original grow outs, just through individual selection. Val and Dan McMurray (B.C MC D), who actively exchange seeds with european growers, asked Rita De Clereq to try and get hold of some of the local Belgium "heirlooms" or family varieties when they started trading with her. She found four varieties, two of which turned out to be the same, and one of which had a sport the second year (what is now known as Belgian Pounder). The sport stayed true, and Belgian Pounder has been stable except for the one sport. Rita's Black was named after Rita. Original names weren't very original - Old Farmer's Beefsteak, Old Farmer's Red, Old Farmer's No Name #1, and Old Farmer's No Name #2. With the exception of the one sport plant, all have been stable from the first grow out.
