Les graines étaient conservées dans un petit récipient sphérique en céramique, enfoui depuis environ 800 ans. Après cette découverte, des graines ont été confiées à une femme Amérindienne nommée Winona LaDuke, défenseur de longue date de la souveraineté alimentaire indigène. Elle a appelé la courge Gete-okosomin, un mot Anishinaabe qui signifie grosso modo «vieille courge vraiment cool".<br />

Les fruits ressemble à une banane géante, de couleur orange/carotte, souvent rayée de manière discontinu de trait blanc. L'intérieur ressemble à la courge butternut.<br />
