“Santiam Sunrise” is a work in progress from Adaptive Seeds. It is meant to be a replacement for the hybrid Sungold F1, and is said to be a segregate from crosses with “Russian cherry tomato material.” I am uncertain if Sungold F1 is a parent, but beta-carotene appears to be present in this variety, similar to other Sungold F1 crosses and growouts. This is our ongoing endeavor to replace the ubiquitous Sungold F1. It has been an adventure because many gardeners and plant breeders over the years have tried to recreate the sweet, fruity, orange cherry tomato without success. Santiam Sunrise is comparable in flavor to Sungold with a similar sweetness, but not quite as fruity. Andrew likes it better than the hybrid because it lacks the overwhelming intense taste he finds tiresome. In comparison, he can eat Santiam Sunrise all day long. Tall indeterminate vines are productive and less prone to splitting than Sungold yet the skin is still tender. A continuing selection from crosses with Russian cherry tomato material. Please let us know what you think! (Source: Adaptive Seeds) |
